Theatre Group

There's something different here.

Theatre Group at Theatre On Broadway Denver, Colorado USA

1972
Theatre Group began over 37 years ago as a community theatre program known as the Lakewood Players. With a strong base of community contributions from the theatre artists around Denver, LP rapidly emerged as one of the stronger nonprofit community theatres in the state.

1978
Moved into the newly built Green Mountain Recreation Center at the top of the hill at the end of West Alameda.

1988
In the mid–80's, Lakewood Players later changed locations and underwent a name change, and started performing at their Theatre On Broadway at 135 S. Broadway.

1991
Moved 2 blocks north to 13 S. Broadway.

1998
Theatre Group purchased and remodeled the old RiverTree Theatre into a 124 seat theatre and renamed the space Phoenix Theatre while continuing to perform in both locations. Many other theatre companies took advantage of the new space including Paragon Theatre, NextStage, Acting Up!, and Buntport.

2008
On July 1, 2008, Theatre Group took up a permanent single home at the New Denver Civic Theatre's Cabaret at 721 Santa Fe Drive and continues to present productions as Theatre On Broadway.

At their new venue, Theatre Group made great strides forward in business and artistic value, and in our second season were securing the rights to Broadway and Off–Broadway plays premiering in Colorado. Subsequently, Theatre Group was awarded several Denver Drama Critics Circle Awards and received the highly coveted Best Season.

"Not only did Theatre Group become synonymous with artistic excellence (David Marlowe, OutFront Colorado) with the theatre–going public as a whole, but they also capture a large share of the Gay and Lesbian community as well."

By 1996 Theatre Group had become the preeminent gay theatre in the state with the acclaimed premiers of Jeffrey, Six Degrees of Separation, Howard Crabtree’s Whoop Dee Doo!, Poor Super Man, Love! Valour! Compassion!, and Corpus Christi as well as recent productions of Southern Baptist Sissies, Sordid Lives, Shakespeare's R & J and Cabaret.
